Finished in Silver over Blue
Few automobiles embody the elegance and understated sophistication of the Mercedes-Benz W113 quite like a final-year 280SL, of which only 830 cars were produced. Affectionately known as the "Pagoda" for its distinctive concave hardtop, the final evolution of the W113 combines timeless Paul Bracq styling with the engineering excellence and grand touring refinement that defined Mercedes-Benz during its golden era.
Originally delivered through Mercedes-Benz Manhattan, this 1971 280SL is finished in classic Silver over a beautifully appointed Blue leather interior, complemented by a matching Blue convertible soft top and removable body-colored hardtop. The car underwent an extensive cosmetic and mechanical restoration by Aventura Motors of Southampton, New York, with photographic documentation chronicling the process. The refurbishment included bodywork and refinishing in Glasurit paint, renewed leather upholstery and German square-weave carpeting, and beautifully restored interior woodwork by Madera Concepts of California.
Mechanical attention was equally comprehensive, including a rebuilt cylinder head by Mercedes-Benz specialist Metric Motors out of Canoga Park, California, a rebuilt Bosch fuel injection pump, and extensive refurbishment of the suspension, braking, cooling, and fuel systems. Its fuel-injected 2.8-liter inline-six is paired with a four-speed automatic transmission, delivering the smooth, composed driving experience for which the 280SL is celebrated.
Period appointments such as the ivory-colored steering wheel, Factory Becker Europa radio, and elegant chrome brightwork preserve the car's original character, while the Frigiking air conditioning and discreet Bluetooth connectivity provide welcome modern conveniences. As with any W113, it is important to note that both the notches in the headlights as well as the spot welds on the inner fenders as well as the edges of the hood are all still very much present and preserved nicely from new as can be seen in the gallery.
Accompanied by restoration photographs, factory literature, original owner's manual, maintenance booklet, MB data card, tools, and its removable hardtop, this thoughtfully restored 280SL represents a wonderful opportunity to experience one of Mercedes-Benz's most enduring designs. Equally at home on a winding country road or the concours lawn, the Pagoda remains a benchmark of classic European motoring.
